WhatsApp app or API: which one for AI?

The free WhatsApp Business app is built for a person with a phone. An AI agent needs the WhatsApp Business Platform. Here is what changes when you switch.

Short answer

An AI agent that answers customers automatically needs the WhatsApp Business Platform (Meta's API, often called the WhatsApp API), not the free WhatsApp Business app. The app is meant for people typing on phones and linked devices; the Platform supports software sending and receiving messages, several staff in one inbox, approved message templates and per-message pricing for some message types. An existing number can usually be migrated from the app to the Platform, but the chat history stays behind.

FAQ

Common questions.

Can we keep using the app on some phones?

Not with the same number. Once a number is on the Platform, staff use a shared inbox or your helpdesk instead of the app.

Do we need a provider (BSP)?

Not necessarily. Meta offers the Cloud API directly; providers add inboxes and tools. We choose based on your volume and existing helpdesk.

What does the Platform cost?

Meta charges per message for some message types, at rates that depend on category and country. We estimate it from your volumes and link to Meta's current pricing.

Can the AI send promotions?

Only to customers who opted in, using approved marketing templates, and within local rules on marketing messages.
