Home / Guides / Agency vs freelancer vs in-house

Agency, freelancer or your own hire?

All three can build a working AI agent. They differ in what happens after launch: who maintains it, who is accountable when it breaks, and how much of your own time it takes. Here is the honest version, written by an agency.

Short answer

Hire a freelancer for one well-defined, low-risk automation you can maintain yourself afterwards. Use an agency when the system touches customers or money, needs several integrations, and must keep running after launch with someone accountable. Hire your own AI engineer when AI is core to your product or you will build continuously for years. Oravel is an agency: one system from €3,900 excl. VAT, plus €490 a month to keep it running.

Market figures change; see the sources below and our cost guide for current ranges. Searchlab (March 2026) puts no-code agents at roughly €2,000–€8,000, low-code at €8,000–€30,000 and custom development at €30,000–€80,000.

When a freelancer wins

Choose a freelancer if…

For small, contained jobs a good freelancer is often the fastest and cheapest route.

The task is one workflow, with one or two tools
Nothing breaks badly if it stops for a few days
Someone on your team can maintain it afterwards
You have a referral or portfolio you trust
When an agency wins

Choose an agency if…

You are buying a running system, not just a build.

The agent talks to customers or touches payments, bookings or accounts
It connects to several systems (CRM, WhatsApp, back office)
You need someone accountable for it to keep working next year
You want a contract, a data processing agreement and a clear price
When hiring wins

Hire your own engineer if…

Past a certain volume of work, owning the skill is cheaper and better.

AI is part of the product you sell
You will build and change agents every week, for years
You can recruit, manage and retain a scarce profile
You already have engineers who can review their work
Questions worth asking

Ask any of the three.

  1. Who fixes it at 10 pm on a Friday, and how fast?
  2. What does it cost per month after launch, at our volume?
  3. Do we own the code, prompts and accounts if we stop working together?
  4. Where does our data go, and is there a data processing agreement?
  5. Can you show it working on our own data before we commit? (Oravel offers a free 7-day pilot.)

FAQ

Common questions.

Can we start with a freelancer and move to an agency later?

Yes. Ask the freelancer to document the workflow and hand over all accounts. A well-documented build is easy to take over.

Is an agency always more expensive?

Per hour, usually. Per working system over a year, not always, because maintenance and fixes are included and you spend less of your own time managing.

Does Oravel work alongside our own engineers?

Yes. Many clients have one or two developers; we build the first systems with them and hand over the know-how.
